How to add architectural details to home interior ?

Have a dull, boxy room that needs an upgrade? Do you have a way to make the space look better?

A little architectural detail can transform a boring room into something more interesting and stylish without requiring much work on your part. There is nothing that kick-starts our design envy more quickly than stepping into a home that boasts beautiful architectural details such as exciting ceilings, textured walls, captivating stained-glass, and more.

There is nothing difficult about adding architectural details to your home interior. You can for example add moldings, baseboards or even some ceiling medallions.

Through this blog post, we will see:

  • What architectural details you need to add
  • How to implement them

Whether you have a built-in architecture or not, there are still some ideas you can implement in your home that can help give it a similar feeling as those that have lots of architectural details.

details for the home

1) Buy or DIY ceiling medallions for ceilings or walls

Ceiling medallions might not match every home's style, but they are an easy and fast way to add architectural detail to a room.

Medallions can be purchased, or if you prefer a more modern look, you can even create your own mid-century modern medallion with some creativity. However, the best thing about these medallions is the fact that they are flexible—they can be painted, and they don't need to be attached to a ceiling. Hanging them in clusters at the top of a wall also seems to look great.

You can enhance the architectural elements of your room, or you can add excitement to an otherwise plain ceiling. You can apply these ceiling stencils to your walls to create "crown molding" and showcase your chandeliers using Victorian ceiling stencils, large ceiling stencils, ceiling medallion stencils, and border stencils.

You can continue the panel design up the walls and along the beams. When you want to add sparkle and a glamorous glow to your room at night, use metallic foils or Royal Stencil Cremes.

2) Geometric wallpaper in neutral colors

You'll find the perfect balance as you combine your bold geometric shapes with subtle color palettes to create unique wallpaper designs that are both adventurous and relaxing.

Adding some geometric wallpaper to an accent wall will add character to any space. It is commonly used to establish a look of sophisticated elegance to use neutral colors. A little personality goes a long way in making people feel more at ease. Rooms look a bit more unique when neutral wallpaper mixes several colors. The patterns in neutral rooms are often refined and have a subtle texture, making them seem friendlier and relaxing.

Although you should not expect it to replace a brick wall completely, so long as there are repeated patterns in the pattern, it will at least give it some architectural appeal.

3) Black doors

The power of glossy black doors can elevate any kind of residence to the utmost heights, whether on the inside or outside.

Think about painting the wardrobe doors and the interior doors of your house black. It is not just that black doors can make a hall seem so much more romantic (even if you paint just the outside black and leave the inside white). If you have black everywhere else in the room, a black door will complement that and make the space feel more cohesive.

In addition to the black and white paintwork, this outdoor area shows off a sophisticated look. You can readily imagine the same exterior as white or in even '70s brick, and it becomes forgettable and unremarkable. The moment you plant exterior lights with black paint and exterior furnishings with black paint, you have just improved the appearance of your house.

An upmarket black door and matching window trim highlight the architectural style of this home and give it an upmarket edge.

4) Molding

Decorative moldings add character to your house and serve as the finishing touch. A molding-adorned home demonstrates these qualities through its balance, proportion, and flow. A low-sitting window can be effectively dressed up with molding to give the room a sense of visual and physical height in a room with high ceilings.

The molding on a painting or a picture enhances what lies within, just as a frame does on a work of art. Similar principles apply to windows, ceilings, and walls. Adding molding to rooms with multiple doorways of different heights, for instance, creates cohesion because molding highlights similarities rather than distracting differences.

Moldings are found in many different types, such as crown molding, baseboards, and chair rails. With add-on elements, any kind of molding can be enhanced. The available shades of molding can easily be matched to the style of your room by using shoe rails on baseboards, stair brackets on a staircase, or ornate crown molding on thin picture rails.

Whether it is crown molding or window treatments, recent innovations include lighted forms, providing rooms with a soft glow.

In rooms where warmth and coziness are important, lighted crown molding provides a great complement to home theaters, bedrooms and other areas.

5) Wainscoting

Earlier, wainscoting added structure to the walls of bathrooms or kitchens, for instance, where the walls had excess moisture. Wainscoting today, however, is an integral part of an interior design.

One example is an entrance way with wainscoting that makes a strong first impression on guests. The intricate detail also lends an air of sophistication to a dining room. Besides framing artwork, it serves as a headboard in a bedroom without taking up any floor space.

Modern wainscoting designs occur in a wide range of wood types. In addition to using medium-density fiberboard, one of the most cost-effective paneling options is pressure-treated wood, one of the most attractive and cost-effective choices for any room except those that have water in them.

Adding wainscoting to a room affects its overall style in any case, whether contemporary or craftsman. So, adding wainscoting to high ceiling areas will also help create visual interest and stop walls from being otherwise bare. Furthermore, in more practical terms, wainscoting guards against stains on the wall, which also conceals already existing damage in the wall. Note that wainscoting can also be added on a two-story wall.

6) Lighting Coves

Lighting from a cove is one of the basic methods of lighting a room, where light from a cove with one or more sides is directed to the ceiling plane to provide diffuse lighting.

In many contexts, ambient luminescence is referred to as well. Lighting in coves is usually surface mounted or built into a wall, but can be incorporated into a coffer in the ceiling as well.

Lighting is a great way to add an architectural element at the same time you are creating a stunning light fixture. Using lighting coves is an excellent method to create a warm ambiance in an environment.

If your ceiling is vaulted, you can shine up, or if there's something on the wall you would like to draw attention to, you can shine down. In order to add some visual interest, you could also install lighting covers around the floor or ceiling joists, creating an attractive backdrop.

7) A Fireplace

During those freezing winter months, there is nothing quite as comforting as a crackling fireplace, whether it be for the appearance, sound, or warmth. Decorative elements like fireplaces can add significant style to living rooms (and additional heat, too) since they were once necessary for survival.

Fireplaces create an instant focal point and often add a sense of symmetry to a room, freeing up additional space for the display of art and collections. Also, there is no doubt that grandiose murals will immediately impact any space and catch the attention of passers-by right away.

Whether it is carved into a wall, set flush against it, or extends the entire length of a room, a hearth instantly adds luxury to even the most minimalist of interiors. Additionally, it adds a cozy and unwinding note to a home, so those without one may sense cheated.

8) Baseboard

In order to improve your entire house, you can replace or improve the baseboard. By selecting one that is the perfect fit for your space, you can tie the overall theme and look together. Throughout every room, they provide a visual link.

The purpose of baseboards is to safeguard the walls from damage caused by careless boot kicks, scratches from pets, and vacuum cleaner attachments. As well as fulfilling your aesthetic desires, they ensure that the edges of the wall last longer.

These wood planks are added to old homes with layers of moldings for aesthetic appeal. The evolution of interior design and decoration has influenced the designing pattern of baseboards and architectural skirting, so they have evolved with the fashion for interior decoration.

Among the most popular baseboard materials are:

A) MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)

Molding for baseboards is most commonly made from MDF. This product is made from wood fibers, resins, and other materials that are fusion bonded together. By mixing these materials, the wood becomes harder and can be shaped quickly.

thick baseboards

Due to its texture being thinner than wood, making it easy to cut and has an effortless finish. As a baseboard material, MDF may be an excellent choice if you have a limited budget.

Customize your baseboards by painting, molding, and designing them however you want. However, MDF does not look very good when stained, despite it being hardy.

B) Pine

Pinewood can feel, smell, and touch like natural wood because it is obtained from pine trees. The least expensive of all the woods, pine is perfect for anyone who wants the authenticity of wood while on a tight budget.

However, pine is prone to its own inconsistencies. A molding made from pine may have parts that make the wood harder than others.

Our tip: paint pine baseboards light. This will preserve the woody look and texture under the color.

C) Oak

Oak is hard and consistent, able to withstand staining and heavy pressure better than pine. It can always be stained to match the floor texture despite being expensive.

The best thing about working with oak is that it is readily available in all the hardware stores in your area.

D) Vinyl

Residentially, this is most common in utility rooms and basements. This material comes in rolls and is attached to the wall with an adhesive.

Likewise, this is known as PVC. Although PVC is commonly associated with pipes and plumbing, it can also be used as a baseboard material. Due to its strength and durability, PVC is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

9) Faux columns

Columns in front of a front entry are part of the first impressions that create a home, and many homes have either obsolete pillars or muted support columns that are pretty drab and wouldn't add much interest to the entrance.

In order to make the installation of your faux columns panels as straightforward as possible, we have engineered and manufactured them. However, what if your product needs to wrap around corners while covering multiple walls?

Traditional building materials can make it challenging to create seamless corners and edges, but don't you worry; it's not impossible. Indeed, faux column wraps and corners are specially designed to handle this task without any problems.
